According to a report by CNN, a Ukrainian unit engaged in a critical battlefront has taken to using drones during nighttime operations to deploy mines inside Russia.
Soldiers from Ukraine’s 92nd Brigade’s Code 9.2 drone unit were deployed in Kharkiv, operating approximately four miles away from the border with Russia’s Belgorod region, as reported by the outlet.
CNN joined the unit as they ventured into the field, although the exact date of the operation was not mentioned.
Ukraine has frequently resorted to unconventional methods in its efforts to counter Russia, employing drones and other advanced weaponry to target Russia’s navy, front-line units, and oil industry.
Ukrainian forces have been under heightened pressure in recent months, as Russia has escalated its attacks ahead of the arrival of new supplies from allies, including the US.
According to the Institute for the Study of War, Russia recently initiated a fresh offensive in the Kharkiv region, which is the same area where the unit CNN had been observing. This offensive has resulted in the establishment of a buffer zone along the border.
The unit informed CNN that it holds the record for 24 sorties with Vampire drones in just one night, although it is unclear if the nighttime mission was part of a larger battle plan for Ukraine.
According to CNN, the unit strategically positioned its equipment during dusk to minimize the chances of Russian drones detecting its presence before nightfall rendered its activities unworkable.
Under the cover of darkness and with a clear night sky, they successfully deployed a Vampire drone armed with explosives towards Russia.
According to CNN, pilot Sasha monitored the drone’s flight across the border from a bunker, using a control similar to a PlayStation, despite Russia’s jamming efforts.
Within a mere ten minutes, it unleashed two explosive payloads onto a specific stretch of road.
According to CNN, the unit reported that the mines struck both an armored car and a soft skin vehicle the next day.
Ukrainian forces have been employing drones throughout the war with great success. These unmanned aerial vehicles have been instrumental in launching continuous attacks on Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, causing significant damage to its oil industry, and playing a pivotal role in the destruction of two-thirds of Russian tanks.
Russia has utilized drones in conjunction with missiles to take advantage of Ukraine’s air defense deficiencies and launch nighttime attacks on Ukrainian positions.
