In a surprising turn of events, a priest in Florida found himself in the midst of a physical altercation while administering Communion to his congregation. During the altercation, he allegedly bit a woman’s hand, causing quite a stir among the worshippers.
The Diocese of Orlando released a statement recounting an incident that occurred during Mass at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in St. Cloud, Florida. The incident involved a female parishioner and Father Fidel Rodriguez, which took place at around 10 a.m. on Sunday. It started when the woman approached Father Rodriguez’s Holy Communion line and seemed to be unaware of the proper procedure.
According to a statement, the woman was found to be unprepared and unwilling to partake in Communion after a short conversation. Father Rodriguez proceeded to offer her a blessing and advised her to receive the Sacrament of Penance (Confession) before returning to receive Holy Communion (Eucharist).
According to the Diocese of Orlando, during Mass on Sunday, the woman who arrived at 12 p.m. stood in Father Rodriguez’s Communion line. At one point, Father Rodriguez asked her if she had been to the Sacrament of Penance (Confession). In response, the woman stated that it was not his business.
According to a statement from the Diocese of Orlando, the woman was promptly asked to leave.
Officials emphasized that Father Rodriguez had no prior knowledge of the woman’s background. They further stated that while the Diocese of Orlando does not support physical altercations, Father Rodriguez acted in good faith to prevent the desecration of the Holy Communion. As a priest, it is his duty to protect the sacred sacrament.
The priest has not been charged with any crimes by the authorities at this time, but there is a possibility that charges could be brought against him once the investigation is complete. Officials have not disclosed any information regarding the injuries the woman may have sustained during the altercation.
In the Catholic tradition, the Eucharist holds a significant place as “the source and summit” of worship and faith, according to the Diocese of Orlando. Consequently, the act of participating in Holy Communion necessitates a thorough comprehension, deep reverence, and unwavering devotion.
“The Diocese of Orlando holds the belief that it is essential to respect individuals of all faiths and ensure that their religious ceremonies or services are never disrupted,” stated officials.
The Diocese of Orlando has stated that they will refrain from making any further comments on the incident while the investigation is still ongoing.
