Justice Sonia Sotomayor shared her reflections on her tenure at the Supreme Court on Friday, candidly admitting that certain decisions made by the high court have deeply moved her to tears.

“There have been days when I’ve arrived at my office, following the announcement of a case, and closed my door, unable to hold back tears,” shared Sotomayor on Friday during a special event held in her honor at Harvard University.

“There have been days like these before, and it’s likely that there will be more,” she emphasized in her speech, according to The New York Times.

The Harvard event took place as the Supreme Court approaches the final weeks of its term. Opinions on several significant cases are anticipated, including the question of whether the former President is immune from prosecution for his alleged involvement in overturning the 2020 election, as well as concerns surrounding the use of abortion pills like mifepristone.

In her speech, Justice Sotomayor, the most senior liberal justice on the conservative-leaning Supreme Court, refrained from discussing a specific case.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg joined the nation’s highest court in 2009, nominated by former President Obama. Over the years, she has expressed her disagreements with fellow justices.

She emphasized that having disagreements about ideas does not make someone evil or bad, acknowledging that it can be challenging.

She also acknowledged that the disagreements had stirred up strong emotions. However, the Times pointed out that despite expressing frustration, she maintained an optimistic tone.

Sotomayor admitted to experiencing profound sadness and occasional moments of despair.

“We all experience hardships. However, it is important to acknowledge and embrace them. It’s crucial to allow ourselves to express our emotions, to shed tears if needed, and then gather the strength to pick ourselves up and keep moving forward,” emphasized the justice.
