Before Mark Robinson, North Carolina’s Republican governor candidate, addressed the stage at the state party’s convention on Saturday, other state candidates used their speeches to inspire the audience by endorsing Robinson’s gubernatorial campaign.
When the state’s lieutenant governor took the stage more than an hour and a half into the NCGOP Convention’s Old North State Dinner in Greensboro, Robinson began his fiery speech by criticizing the media for focusing too much on Donald Trump’s ongoing criminal and civil trials rather than the “failures of the Democratic Party.” He also revealed his vision for the state, which he claimed is focused on boosting the economy and education.
During his speech, which Triad Television livestreamed, Robinson said, “Trust me, there are enough people in this state who are talented enough and share the vision that we have that we can make this a reality, folks.”
In one of the most intense gubernatorial contests of the 2024 election, the 55-year-old Republican finds himself up against Democratic opponent and state Attorney General Josh Stein. Robinson’s outspoken political style has piqued the interest of Trump followers, as well as the former president himself, who formally endorsed Robinson in March at a Greensboro event, describing him as “Martin Luther King on steroids.”
Robinson has also piqued the interest of critics, who believe his statements toward the LGBTQ community and restricting abortion access should be cause for alarm. The Greensboro native has already justified his past remarks, claiming that he can separate his religious beliefs from public office and aspires to make North Carolina a “destination state for life.”
During his speech, Robinson referred to himself as “part of the winning team” and attributed Republican policies to the state’s economic success, emphasizing the role of the governor’s office under his leadership in maintaining that achievement.
“North Carolina is literally on the cusp of exploding economically,” Robinson stated. “It’s time for us to direct that explosion in the right way and cause this state to be something better than it already is.”
Education in North Carolina is another focus for Robinson, who claims the state’s education system is “in shambles.” However, Robinson claimed that the status of education is not the responsibility of teachers and that he considers teachers to be on par with police officers.
North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum was also a keynote speaker at Saturday’s event, and he began his remarks by referring to Robinson as the state’s next governor. He also reaffirmed the comments of Republican National Committee co-chair Lara Trump and her husband, Eric Trump, who both spoke at the convention on Friday, that North Carolina will be a key state in 2024, with the potential to “determine the actual direction of our entire country.”
