After a white man harassed a black woman on an Amtrak train, she claims she felt scared and that government officials did nothing to help her.
During a business class flight from Boston to New York City on May 12, Nafรญs White reported being “accosted” by a man sitting in front of her.
The following day, she shared a video of the incident on her Instagram.
White claimed he accused her of shaking his seat and opening a tray table, which she disputed, assuring the mystery guy that she had not moved the tray table at any time throughout the flight.
“My friend asked him why he was being so disrespectful to us, and he asked him why he was deliberately targeting me. The man then turned around and forcibly pulled his seat all the way back in an attempt to smash my legs and invade my space,” White wrote on Instagram, captioning a video of the incident.
White claimed that the man kept gazing at her and a companion seated next to her and refused to turn around, forcing her to begin recording him for her “protection.”
The video begins with a white man extending his hand in front of her phone before aiming it back at her camera.
“You can film me back if you want, but you really don’t need to be antagonizing me,” White responds. “That is entirely unacceptable; therefore, I shall videotape you until you turn around. “This is absolutely ridiculous.”
But instead of turning back, the man gets up from his seat, stands next to White, and continues filming her.
As the man approached White, several passengers intervened, demanding that he leave her alone. She asked the witnesses to find the conductor and inform the police.
The footage captures White saying, “He needs to get off this train. He’s going to be violent with me or something.”
“Ignore him,” said one person. “Please get help,” White said.
“I believed that he was moving towards me to further frighten and physically harm me,” White wrote in the description.
According to White, some passengers called Amtrak to find the conductors. Meanwhile, White stated that the man stood between her car and the next, near the exit doors, and kept “motioning me with his hands to come to him, the kind of motion you see on martial arts films when one person wants to fight another.” She wrote, “I did not move from my seat.”
When a conductor arrived, White claimed he chatted with the man, but he never addressed her or communicated with any of the witnesses. So, as she left the train, she asked the same conductor for the man’s name and contact information. According to White, the conductor justified the man’s reaction by stating that she was rocking her seat and pushing the tray table, a statement he described as “falsehoods.”
The conductor, believing the white man’s word over the black lady, declined to escalate her position to his superiors or provide White with contact information to register a complaint, she claimed.
On Instagram, nearly 14,000 people watched White’s video, with many tagging and criticizing Amtrak for the staff’s lack of support for the woman and praising her ability to remain calm during the meeting with the man.
One user praised you for maintaining your composure throughout.
Another person said, “I’m so sorry this occurred! What a terrible period, especially given the prevalence of concealed carry. I’m so glad you had the support of your friends and strangers. It’s encouraging that others stood up for you. But it shouldn’t have been required.” Hugs and love.”
White has stated that she does not want the conductor to lose his job and instead wants him to receive extra training.
But what about the other passenger, who reportedly harassed her? She stated, “We need to bar the attacker for life.”
