On Friday, the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office announced the conviction of a San Francisco man for the abuse of a teenage girl on a Muni train in 2023. The conviction follows a traumatic occurrence on May 4, 2023, in which several passengers witnessed the assault but did not interfere.
The incident took place on the J Church line as the 16-year-old victim was returning home from school. According to the DA’s office, 39-year-old Iman Session began performing unpleasant acts near the victim.
The devastated girl and her father immediately reported the event to the San Francisco Police Department, resulting in Session’s arrest on June 6, 2023. Assistant District
Attorney Tanisha Gooch praised the child survivor’s fortitude, saying, “It is because of the survivor’s courage that we were able to obtain justice in this case.” Children should feel comfortable when riding public transportation. “We will not tolerate such behavior in our city.”
The case has raised concerns about public transit safety and the bystander effect, in which witnesses fail to intervene during a crime.
