Rep. Summer Lee emerges victorious in Pennsylvania’s 12th Congressional District Democratic primary, as declared by Decision Desk HQ. Despite facing criticism regarding her stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict, she successfully defended her position and secured the nomination.

Lee, a first-term member of the Squad and a rising star within the progressive coalition, will now advance to the general election in the blue district. Despite facing a primary challenge from Edgewood Councilmember Bhavini Patel, Lee emerged victorious and will continue to vie for the seat.

Lee emerged as a highly sought-after candidate in this election cycle, drawing attention from both Democrats and Republicans who aimed to unseat the progressive congresswoman representing western Pennsylvania. Her stance on the Israel-Hamas war, which involved advocating for a cease-fire and expressing pro-Palestinian sentiments, rendered her more susceptible to challenges compared to other House progressives.

In this election cycle, Lee focused her attacks on Jeffrey Yass, a billionaire GOP donor who used a super PAC supporting Patel to spend large sums of money to undermine her campaign.

Despite facing criticism from certain conservatives and moderates, Lee managed to build a strong support base due to her popularity as the first Black congresswoman from the state. This, in turn, resulted in a significant amount of funds being raised.

Lee’s campaign claims that she has raised $2.5 million, with a war chest of $1.18 million. They assert that Lee outperformed Patel by raising more than three times the amount in the first fundraising quarter. Furthermore, they state that Lee raised more money than any other House candidate in Pennsylvania by the fourth quarter. It is worth noting that a significant portion of Lee’s contributions came from small-dollar donations.

She received widespread support from not just individual voters in the district, but also from a diverse range of Democrats. This includes endorsements from influential figures like Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.). Additionally, prominent advocacy organizations such as the AFL-CIO and Planned Parenthood Action Fund have also thrown their support behind her.

Justice Democrats, along with the Congressional Progressive Caucus and Congressional Black Caucus, provided support to Lee during her campaign for the 2022 midterms. It is worth mentioning that Senator John Fetterman, known for his populist views and support for Israel during his initial term in office, endorsed her re-election bid, along with Senator Bob Casey.

During Lee’s initial campaign, she narrowly secured victory by a mere few votes. Notably, the Democratic Majority for Israel, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, and its associated super PAC, United Democracy Project, were heavily invested in preventing Lee’s election to Congress. However, in the current election cycle, their direct involvement has diminished, and Yass has assumed a prominent position in funding her opponent.

Yass’s role in opposing Lee and his connection to former President Trump have heavily influenced the outcome of the race. Prominent figures like Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who support Yass, have emphasized the difference between Lee’s rejection of corporate money in politics and Patel’s reliance on funding from Yass.

“SummerForPA has consistently challenged the power of the billionaire class,” Sanders expressed in a recent post on the social platform X, just days before Election Day. “It is concerning to witness wealthy Trump donors like Jeffrey Yass investing millions of dollars to undermine her campaign.”

The messaging, supported by Lee herself, proved to be highly effective. Her victory almost guarantees her another term in the lower chamber as a member of the progressive caucus’s more vocal faction. This faction has been under attack this election cycle by moderates and some Republicans aligned with Trump from outside sources.
