Swedish customs made one of the country’s biggest cocaine seizures ever, seizing almost 1.4 tons of the narcotic last week in a port near Stockholm, an official told Swedish television on Tuesday.
“If it is as big as we think, it is one of the biggest seizures ever made,” Stefan Granath of Swedish customs told SVT, adding that they were still waiting for an exact number on how much was discovered.
Granath asserted that on April 18, a container at the Nynashamn port, south of Stockholm, contained the substance. They have arrested six guys on suspicion of assisting in its transportation.
Granath stated that the medicine was most likely intended for the European market, with Sweden serving solely as a transit country.SVT quoted Granath as saying, “Just five to 10 years ago, it was very unusual to seize only 100 kilograms.”
Research released earlier this month discovered that criminal networks in the European Union are infiltrating legal firms throughout the 27-nation bloc. According to the report, the network’s primary activities include drug trafficking and corruption.
In recent months, European detectives have discovered enormous amounts of cocaine hidden in unusual places. In March, Portuguese investigators discovered 1.3 tons of cocaine stashed inside frozen fish shipments. Last August, Dutch police discovered 17,600 pounds of cocaine stashed inside banana boxesโthe greatest haul ever found in Rotterdam’s port, according to authorities.
According to the research, real estate, supermarkets, hotels, and other economic activities received profits from drug and arms trafficking.
According to official estimates, the volume of cocaine intercepted by Swedish customs peaked in 2022, with 822 kilograms confiscated. This was approximately 300 kilos more than the previous record, set in 2018.
The figure reflects more efficient search methods and an overall increase in drug flow, according to Swedish radio.
