Philadelphia kicked off Pride Month by breaking the Guinness World Record for the most people at a drag queen storytime reading.
263 people attended the Saturday event, which the Philadelphia Gay News organized and VisitPhilly sponsored, to hear a series of drag performers read from popular children’s literature.
Brittany Lynn, a performer who organizes Drag Queen Story Time events in the Philadelphia area, hosted the record attempt at the National Constitution Center and was the first reader of the morning.
“I couldn’t think of a better way to kick off Pride than to be here with you,” Lynn said to the audience before reading Martha Day Zschock’s Hello, Philadelphia.
Brittany Lynn, a drag performer, LGBTQ+ activist, literacy advocate, and the founder of the award-winning Philly Drag Mafia, attended the event, which featured Aurora, Icon Ebony Fierce, Athena Chanteuse, and Morgan Wells. #pride pic.twitter.com/mbWCkU9kHY . A Guinness World Records adjudicator was present to verify the size of the gathering, and VisitPhilly later proclaimed the successful record on social media.
