Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.) stated on Tuesday that he “likes the idea” of arresting former COVID response leader Anthony Fauci for his testimony on Monday regarding the Trump administration’s early response to the coronavirus.

Comer claimed Fauci lied to Congress about the government’s initial COVID reaction, stating he made up the recommended six-foot distance, which swiftly became commonplace due to the epidemic and other limits.

“At the end of the day, lying to Congress is a felony,” Comer stated during a Fox Business interview. “And when you look at the clip you just showed, everyone knows that Doctor Fauci was the lead innovator in the spacing distance.”

“This is something that not only shut down tens of thousands of businesses in America but also ran the debt up as a result of having to subsidize those businesses that were shut down and have to subsidize the unemployment rate,” he said. “It devastated public education. Children were unable to attend school due to Dr. Fauci’s six-foot social distance restrictions.

Monday’s testimony marked Fauci’s first time answering questions under oath since leaving the ministry. He was grilled by many Republican critics, who attempted to blame the former White House medical adviser for the difficulties Americans suffered during the outbreak.

Comer stated in a Newsmax interview earlier Tuesday that he hopes the testimony will be used to generate evidence for a criminal probe into Fauci.

“Hopefully, we can take his words today and continue to try to gather evidence and take steps to try to hold him in criminal wrongdoing because I believe that the majority of Americans realize that Dr. Fauci made costly mistakes; he’s lied about them and he’s tried to cover it up,” Comer stated.

Comer leads the House Oversight Committee, which has attempted to link Fauci to misbehavior at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). Fauci had managed NIAID for decades, but he said that he was unaware of a senior adviser’s efforts to circumvent public disclosure regulations.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) also chastised Fauci, refusing to acknowledge him as “Doctor,” and became emotional throughout the hearing when recounting the years of harassment and death threats he has gotten as a result of his leadership during the COVID response.
