Chesebro is facing charges for his alleged involvement in a scheme to appoint fake electors in Wisconsin. The plan aimed to overturn Joe Biden’s victory and secure a win for Trump by flipping the state’s 10 electoral votes. However, the scheme was unsuccessful and did not gain much support.
On Tuesday, two more individuals were charged in connection to the January 6th Capitol riot. Among them were Michael Roman, a former Trump campaign aide, and James Troupis, a former attorney for Trump who represented him during the 2020 election in Wisconsin. While this is Troupis’ first time facing charges, Roman, who is 51 years old, was previously a co-defendant for Trump in Georgia and is also listed as a co-conspirator in Arizona.
Other Republicans allegedly involved in fake elector schemes in Michigan and Nevada have also been charged separately by prosecutors. Although fake elector plots were reported in Pennsylvania and New Mexico as well, no charges have been filed regarding these incidents.
On September 19, the court will hear the case of the three defendants in Wisconsin. Possible consequences of their conviction include a maximum prison sentence of six years and a fine of up to $10,000.
Upon the filing of charges on Tuesday, Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers, who is a Democrat, had a succinct response: “Good.”
In 2020, Trump was defeated in Wisconsin by a narrow margin of less than 21,000 votes. Interestingly, this was almost the same margin by which he won the state in 2016.
Trump remained silent on Tuesday after his friends were charged, even though he had already posted 15 times on Truth Social before noon. This is not the first time that his friends have faced charges while he has not commented on the matter.
