On Monday, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) identified the woman who tragically passed away in an SUV carjacking. The incident has left the community in shock and mourning.
On Tuesday, MPD reported that Leslie Marie Gaines, aged 55 and a resident of Northeast, was inside an SUV parked at MedStar Washington Medical Center. According to the report, Gaines’ daughter stepped out of the vehicle to retrieve a wheelchair for her mother.
According to the police, Gaines was taken away by Kayla Kenisha Brown, 22, who was present at the hospital and drove off in an SUV.
According to MPD, at about 1:30 p.m., Brown was driving in the 400 block of 6th St. NW when she attempted to turn onto D Street NW and collided with a structure at 601 D St. NW. Officers report that Brown exited the SUV and attempted to flee, but a police captain stopped her.
They took Gaines to a hospital, where she passed away.
Brown is charged with felony murder, kidnapping, and carjacking, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. He is due to appear in court on Tuesday afternoon.
