During a speech, Macron emphasized the importance of a “clear majority in serenity and harmony” for the country. He expressed his concern about the increasing influence of far-right parties across the continent and stated that he cannot simply stand by and let it continue.
He stated, “I strongly believe that a unified, powerful, and self-sufficient Europe is beneficial for France. Therefore, I cannot support this circumstance.” He further emphasized that this was a significant and weighty choice that he did not take lightly.
“The act of trust is of utmost importance,” stated the President. He continued, “It involves having confidence in you, in the capability of the French people to make the correct decision for themselves and for generations to come.”
In a significant gamble, Macron, who secured a second term as President in April 2022, has made the move to call for new elections. His centrist coalition had lost its absolute majority in parliament two months later, resulting in the formation of a minority government. With this decision, there is a possibility that his coalition could lose additional ground and potentially lose all control of the 577-seat National Assembly.
According to Politico, supporters were taken aback and even screamed “oh no!” while watching Le Pen’s address. On the other hand, both critics and backers of the National Rally were thrilled and chanted “dissolution, dissolution” during a rally where Le Pen delivered a speech.
According to a report by Al Jazeera, she confidently declared, “If the French place their trust in us during the forthcoming national elections, we are prepared to assume power.”
On June 30, the snap election is scheduled to take place, followed by a run-off round on July 7. It’s worth noting that Macron’s presidential term ends in 2027, and he is prohibited from running for a third term.
