The Kansas City Chiefs have made it their top priority to boost their number of significant pass plays in the upcoming offseason.
The team made some notable moves to bolster their offense, signing speedy wide receiver Marquise Brown and drafting Xavier Worthy in the first round. According to quarterback Patrick Mahomes, head coach Andy Reid has been urging him to take more shots downfield.
Mahomes shared that during the Chiefs’ offseason practices, if he doesn’t attempt certain plays, his coach will make snide remarks like, “Oh, you want to throw the checkdown here?” However, Mahomes takes it all in good stride and responds by saying, “I got you, Coach; we’re going to push it.” Overall, Mahomes finds the dynamic between him and his coach to be enjoyable.
Despite throwing interceptions or being deceived by defensive coverage on a particular play, Mahomes has always appeared unbothered. However, he recently mentioned that he has improved his ability to move past negative plays and is better than ever.
“I feel incredibly comfortable now, more than ever before, with not letting anything affect me,” he stated. “During practice, when facing off against Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, it’s impossible to be correct every time. There have been occasions where I’ve been beaten by blitzes and Spags has caught me off guard with new pressures he’s testing out. However, I’ve learned to quickly release the ball and get it to the checkdown or any other available option, allowing me to keep playing.”
On Thursday night, the Chiefs are set to receive their Super Bowl LVIII championship rings in a special ceremony. This event marks the official conclusion of the 2023 season, much like the ceremony held by the team last year for their Super Bowl LVII win. Mahomes expressed his excitement for the upcoming ceremony and the opportunity to commemorate the team’s impressive achievement.
According to the Chiefs, their focus is now set on the upcoming training camp as they aim to achieve a historic milestone in the NFL, becoming the first team to win three consecutive championships in the Super Bowl era by 2024.
He stated that it’s important to acknowledge that every team they face will bring their A-game. Despite this, he believes that the team matured throughout last year’s season as they were relatively young. For this year, he emphasizes the need to learn from past mistakes and continue to grow.
As we kick off a new season, I have experienced this before and understand that it’s going to be a significant challenge every single week. We have some tough opponents lined up early in the season, and we are ready to take them on.
