The SSA Office of the Inspector General (OIG) advises the public to be vigilant against attempts by individuals seeking personal information under the guise of assisting with a COLA from SSA.
Inspector General Ennis emphasized that legitimate COLA increases issued by SSA are always automatic, requiring no additional information from beneficiaries. He warned against sharing personal information, as reports of misinformation are often related to scams aimed at identity theft or financial fraud.
For accurate COLA information, refer to ssa.gov/cola.
Social Security Commissioner Martin OโMalley clarified that reports of a $600 payment increase are false and cautioned the public not to be deceived. He assured that SSA is actively addressing these false claims, and no COLA increase will occur until January 2025.
Since 1983, SSA has consistently issued its annual COLA in December. Beneficiaries receive notices directly in early December regarding their benefit amounts for the upcoming January payments. Additionally, My Social Security account holders can view their COLA notice online once the adjustment is announced.
