Police have announced that they have made an arrest in the case of a mother of five who was tragically killed on a hiking trail in Maryland almost a year ago.
According to the Baltimore Banner, the Harford County Sheriff’s Office has announced the arrest of 23-year-old Victor Martinez Hernandez in connection with the death of Rachel Morin. The suspect, who hails from El Salvador, was apprehended on Friday at a bar in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
During an online news conference, Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler declared, “The individual who took Rachel’s life is no longer a free person. It is our hope that he will never be granted the opportunity to walk freely again.”
In August 2023, the lifeless body of Morin, aged 37, was discovered along the Ma and Pa walking trail in Bel Air, Maryland.
During the investigation into Morin’s murder, DNA was discovered at the crime scene. This DNA profile was later connected to a home invasion and assault in California. Despite efforts by law enforcement, the suspect remained at large and the case went unsolved. However, on Friday, there was a major breakthrough in the case.
Gahler announced that Rachel’s killer is now in custody and will no longer be roaming free. The breakthrough in the investigation came from DNA evidence, which helped identify the suspect in the video released by the authorities from Los Angeles. Gahler expressed his hope that the perpetrator will never be able to walk free again.
According to a report by WBAL-TV, it has been disclosed by the police that Hernandez had been residing in the US illegally since February 2023.
According to Gahler, the police received a lead in the case on the day that would have marked Morin’s 38th birthday. Utilizing that lead, they were able to identify the suspect through genetic genealogy.
Last week, he was discovered at a bar in Tulsa, seated and presumably enjoying a drink.
Gahler shared that Harford County is located 1,800 miles away from the Southern border and yet, they have already experienced two cases of women being killed by illegal suspects. He revealed that the suspects were from El Salvador and had connections to criminal gangs in both instances.
Victor Hernandez came to this place not to seek a better life for himself or his family, but to flee from a crime he had committed in El Salvador. It is unacceptable that such a situation is happening.
