During a brief news briefing on Saturday, Sergeant Juan Garcia, an investigator from the child abuse unit at the Harris County Sheriffโs Office, stated that he believed the baby was born that morning based on the presence of an attached umbilical cord and fresh placenta on the newborn.
Garcia highlighted the importance of the two witnesses who were walking on the trail with their child and dogs, stating that they were a blessing.
“He walked away from a white towel, catching the attention of the authorities who quickly noticed a child in need. The scorching heat could have been detrimental to the child’s health had they not acted swiftly. Fortunately, they contacted 911 immediately, ensuring the child’s safety,” he explained.
The National Weather Service cautioned that the regions surrounding Houston would experience hot and humid weather during the Father’s Day weekend.
The abandoned baby in Katy had a close call on Saturday when the maximum temperature was forecasted to reach a scorching 95F. If she had not been found as quickly as she was, she could have been exposed to dangerously high temperatures.
While returning from her morning walk, Daniela Fedele noticed a towel on the way back home due to the hot weather. Upon closer inspection, she saw that a little baby had its two feet moving. Daniela was in disbelief and thought to herself, “Am I seeing this, right? Like, are my eyes really seeing a baby here?” as reported by KPRC.
Luis Marin, the husband, shared with the outlet that he was holding the baby when they opened their eyes and looked at him. He made eye contact with the baby and couldn’t believe that someone could do something so cruel.
Garcia confirmed on Saturday that they have not received any leads regarding the incident, but are currently reviewing potential surveillance footage from the area where it occurred.
According to him, the charges in connection to this incident would include abandoning and endangering a child.
If you’re a parent who needs assistance after giving birth to a newborn baby, Garcia encourages you to utilize the Baby Moses or Safe Haven law. This law permits individuals to bring their newborns to a designated safe location without any inquiries.
Parents who feel incapable of caring for their newborn baby can take advantage of the law which permits hospitals and fire stations to receive the child.
