A firefighter lost his life and train travel was severely disrupted in southern Germany on Sunday due to flooding, high river levels, and heavy rain.
According to the dpa news agency, a tragic incident occurred in the town of Pfaffenhofen, Bavaria, where a firefighter lost his life while attempting to rescue residents from floodwaters. The firefighter’s body was recovered after the inflatable watercraft he was on, along with three other firefighters, capsized during the operation on the Ilm River.
Late on Saturday, near the town of Schwaebisch Gmund, approximately 50 kilometers (30 miles) east of Stuttgart, a long-distance train derailed due to the collapse of the ground beneath a section of the track. Thankfully, all 185 passengers on board the train escaped unharmed.
German rail operator Deutsche Bahn has issued a warning about significant disruptions to train services, including extensive cancellations and delays. They have assured customers who have had to postpone their trips that their tickets will still be valid. The affected routes include those connecting Munich to Berlin, Stuttgart, and the Swiss city of Zurich. Travelers should be prepared for potential inconveniences on these routes.
