Jenna Ellis, a former attorney for former President Trump, has reached an agreement to have her law license suspended for three years in Colorado. This suspension comes as a result of her involvement in efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
On Tuesday, the presiding disciplinary judge gave their approval to the settlement reached between Ellis and the Colorado Attorney Counsel.
In October, Ellis admitted to aiding and abetting false statements and writings. She entered into a plea agreement with prosecutors in the Georgia 2020 election interference case, where Trump and 17 others were indicted for participating in an unlawful conspiracy to maintain the former president’s hold on power.
In March 2023, the Office of Attorney Regulation Counsel in Colorado first censured her for making false statements about the 2020 presidential election on national television and Twitter.
Ellis will be suspended starting from July 2 for a duration of three years.
Two watchdog groups sought to have her disbarred, but the settlement clarified that disbarment is the usual punishment for her misconduct. However, it emphasized that her criminal liability stems from her role as an accessory, rather than as a principal.
According to the settlement, it is clear that she was involved in the dissemination of false statements by attending the Georgia Senate Subcommittee meeting. However, she did not play a role in drafting or preparing these false statements.
In the settlement, it is mentioned that she has shown remorse and acknowledged the harm caused by her misconduct. Furthermore, she has taken significant and concrete measures to mitigate the harm caused. The settlement recommends a three-year suspension as an appropriate sanction.
If Ellis wants to reinstate her Colorado law license, she must file a petition.
In her letter dated May 22nd, Ellis expressed her profound remorse and acknowledged the harm her misconduct had caused.
In a heartfelt statement, she emphasized that her decision to come forward and take responsibility for her actions is not driven by any political agenda, personal animosity towards her former client, or any other motives that may be used to undermine or discredit her. She simply acknowledges that she played a part in the post-election activities of 2020 on behalf of then-President Donald Trump, which she now realizes caused harm to the nation. With humility, she admits that her involvement was a mistake.
“I am willing to accept the suspension as a consequence, and I encourage those who still believe the 2020 election was stolen to reconsider their position,” she stated gratefully.
“I will always uphold the truth, even if it means acknowledging my mistakes,” Ellis concluded.
