A man wanted in connection with the random attack on actor Steve Buscemi on a New York City street earlier this month was detained on an assault charge Friday, according to authorities.
On May 8, a stranger punched the 66-year-old “Boardwalk Empire” and “Fargo” star in the face while he was walking in midtown Manhattan, according to city police. The hospital transported him with bruising, swelling, and bleeding in his left eye, but his publicist reported that he was otherwise well.
Police accused a 50-year-old homeless man of second-degree assault on Friday afternoon in the same precinct where Buscemi suffered a beating. Authorities said on Tuesday that they had identified the culprit and were searching for him.
It was unclear whether the individual had counsel who could reply to the charges. We left a phone message at the local public defenders’ office.
Buscemi’s spokesperson did not immediately respond to a message. In prior comments, they stated that the actor was “another victim of a random act of violence in the city” and was fine.
A rock struck Michael Stuhlbarg, Buscemi’s “Boardwalk Empire” co-star, in the back of the neck in March as he was strolling in Manhattan’s Central Park. Stuhlbarg pursued his attacker, leading to his apprehending outside the park.
