A church service in Pennsylvania came to a horrifying halt on Sunday when cops claimed a man pulled a gun on the pastor and attempted to shoot him during his sermon.
The incident occurred at Jesus’ Dwelling Place Church in North Braddock, Pennsylvania, shortly after 1:00 p.m. ET, according to the Pennsylvania State Police.
According to authorities, the suspected gunman, 26-year-old Bernard Junior Polite, entered the church and allegedly attempted to shoot Pastor Glenn Germany while delivering his sermon via live video.
Authorities report that the suspect’s pistol failed to fire, allowing a congregation member and the pastor to detain and disarm him without causing any harm to anyone.
“I’m thankful to God that I’m still here because he definitely pulled the trigger,” Germany told ABC News affiliate WTAE.
Germany told the outlet about the terrifying experience. Prior to the attempted attack, Polite smiled at him.
“I started to begin to preach, and all of a sudden, from my left-hand side, I saw him move from the back to the front of the church, and he set up in the front corner of the church and smiled at me,” German recounted.
“All of a sudden, I saw a rifle pointed directly at me. “And at that point, all I could do was run for cover,” he explained.
The pastor then praised the church member who took action to subdue Polite, stating, “He could have lost his life in that struggle, but he sacrificed himself for everyone, and he’s the hero.”
Officers from the Pennsylvania State Police kept the suspect at the church until they arrived and captured him.
The police stated that charges had been filed. Polite’s arraignment information and a legal representative were not immediately available.
