French President Emmanuel Macron has reiterated his willingness to deploy French troops to Ukraine, outlining the specific circumstances under which such a move would be considered.
In an interview with The Economist, Macron emphasized the pressing danger posed by Russian President Vladimir Putin to Europe following the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
When asked about his previous remarks on the potential deployment of NATO troops to aid Ukraine’s defense, Macron stated that he is not dismissing any possibilities. He emphasized the need to consider the actions of a counterpart who is also open to various options.
“We have made a mistake by being too cautious in setting boundaries for someone who has lost all limits and is the one initiating aggression,” he stated.
In response to the possibility of Russian forces breaching the front lines in Ukraine, French President stated that he would contemplate dispatching French troops if there was a formal request from Ukraine. However, at present, such a request has not been made.
According to his statement, in the event that Ukraine is defeated by Russia, it is highly likely that Russia would then set its sights on attacking another European country.
In recent months, political and military leaders have become more alarmed as they issue dire warnings about the potential consequences of a Russian triumph in Ukraine.
French President Emmanuel Macron’s comments on deploying French troops to protect Ukraine demonstrate a remarkably assertive stance, making him one of the most hawkish leaders in the Western world.
Ukraine is currently grappling with the challenge of preventing Russia from breaching its defensive lines, all while facing a blockade on US aid. Despite the recent passing of a $61 billion aid bill, Ukraine continues to battle against escalating Russian attacks.
NATO countries have provided financial assistance and weapons to support Ukraine, but they have refrained from engaging in direct confrontation due to concerns over the potential escalation of the conflict with Russia, which possesses nuclear capabilities.
According to NATO’s founding treaty, member countries are obligated to come to each other’s defense in the event of an attack.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov warned that if NATO troops were deployed to Ukraine, it would inevitably result in a war between Russia and the alliance.
“We should discuss not just the likelihood, but the certainty,” Peskov remarked, as reported by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.
In a recent discussion with Business Insider, analysts examined the possibility of Russia launching an attack on NATO. Ruth Deyermond, a Russian military expert, expressed her view that Putin’s regime is not strong enough militarily to take the risk of engaging in a direct confrontation with NATO.
During the interview with The Economist, Macron expressed his unwavering determination to thwart any Russian triumph.
He emphasized the importance of keeping all options on the table, stating, “Our goal is to ensure that Russia never achieves victory in Ukraine.”
