A Texas man died and a woman was injured when they were electrocuted in a hot tub at a resort in northwest Mexico, officials and local media said on Wednesday.
The 43-year-old male was in a Jacuzzi with a 35-year-old lady when they were both stunned by a “electric discharge,” according to a statement from the Sonora Attorney General’s Office. The incident occurred at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday inside a private condominium complex in Puerto Peรฑasco, Sonora, according to officials.
The Sonoran Sea Resort’s Jacuzzi electrocuted the couple, Jorge Guillen and Lizette Zambrano of El Paso, according to CBS affiliate KDBC. KDBC and local media shared video of the aftermath of the incident, which appears to show people gathering around a hot tub, some shouting, as someone attempts to perform chest compressions on a person lying on the ground.
Zambrano’s family members told KDBC that he was still in critical condition.
As of Thursday morning, the couple’s GoFundMe campaign had earned more than $21,000.
“Jorge had a heart of gold and was always there for family and friends,” the GoFundMe page states. “The love they shared was one for ages.”
According to KTSM of El Paso, a witness told detectives at the scene that she attempted to enter the Jacuzzi after noticing the couple was unresponsive, but was stunned when she did so and called for aid.
The attorney general’s office stated that investigators will try to “determine the origin of the electrical failure” and promised to release more details later.
According to its website, the Sonoran Sea Resort features three beachfront swimming pools as well as family and adult Jacuzzis. It’s around four hours from Phoenix, Arizona.
Sonoran Resorts Inc.’s sales director, Jim Ringquist, said in a statement Thursday, “We are all devastated by the tragedy that occurred at the Sonoran Sea Resort recently.”
He also stated that the company’s CEO, Fernando Anaya, died abruptly Wednesday from a heart attack, “adding another unfortunate tragedy to the already sad situation.”
“Please accept heartfelt condolences from the Sonoran Resorts Company to the family and friends of both unfortunate deaths,” Ringquist stated.
He clarified that his employer, Sonoran Resorts, does not oversee or run condos after construction is complete. Ringquist stated that his company completed the Sonoran Sea Resort and turned it over to the owners and homeowners association in 2004.
Last June, a man died from an apparent electrocution while repairing a hot tub at a Phoenix fitness center.
