Local media reported that a recent case of an American tourist being found dead near the Greek island of Corfu has surfaced. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident as there have been other cases where tourists have either gone missing or died in the Greek islands.
Local media reports suggest that the police were informed by a tourist who discovered a man in the sea near the old port of Mathraki. According to AFP, the man was found with the help of the tourist.
According to The Associated Press, an American tourist has been reported missing since Thursday. The tourist was last seen alive on Tuesday at a cafe where he was in the company of two female tourists. The two female tourists have since left the island.
Athens News Agency reported that the victim was on vacation with a Greek-American friend at Mathraki, as reported by AFP. Further information regarding the victim, such as their name or hometown, is currently unavailable.
Located west of the popular island of Corfu, Mathraki is a small but picturesque island that covers an area of only 1.2 square miles. With a population of just 100, the island is heavily wooded, making it a perfect destination for nature lovers seeking some peace and quiet.
In Greece’s islands, the man’s death marks the third tragic incident in recent days.
British TV host and author, Dr. Michael Mosley, tragically passed away while hiking on the island of Symi. According to the coroner’s report, he had passed away on the Wednesday prior after navigating treacherous rocky terrain.
Symi is situated in close proximity to the coast of Turkey.
Local media reported that a 74-year-old Dutch tourist who had been missing was found dead early Saturday on the eastern island of Samos. According to reports, the Fire Service drone discovered the body of the tourist lying face down in a ravine, about 330 yards away from where he was last seen on Sunday. The tourist had been observed walking with difficulty in the extreme heat at the time of his disappearance.
As of now, Greek authorities are still on the lookout for three individuals, one of whom is an American citizen, who were reported missing in the past few days on different islands in Greece.
Authorities on the island of Amorgos are actively searching for 59-year-old Albert Calibet who has been reported missing since Tuesday. Calibet, a retired Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy from Hermosa Beach, California, went on a solo hike in very hot conditions before disappearing.
On Thursday, the U.S. State Department spokesperson released a statement to CBS News regarding Calibet’s disappearance, acknowledging that the department was aware of the reports and would collaborate with local authorities to assist in their search efforts.
According to a spokesperson from the State Department, the Greek missing persons alert program has released a notice about this particular case.
