The man responsible for the fatal explosion at a Detroit-area business has been apprehended at a New York airport. He was about to board a one-way flight to Hong Kong when he was arrested.
The man who owned a business in Clinton Township, Michigan, which tragically caught fire and exploded, resulting in the death of a man, has been taken into custody. He was arrested at a New York airport while he was getting ready to board a flight to Hong Kong with a one-way ticket. This arrest was made by authorities on Friday.
Noor Noel Kestou, 31, was arrested on Saturday at John F. Kennedy International Airport by U.S. Customs and New York Port Authority personnel. He was then transported back to Michigan on Wednesday.
Kestou, from Commerce Township, faced an arraignment on Thursday for an involuntary manslaughter charge.
On March 4, a fire and explosion took place in a building located in Clinton Township. The building served as a distribution center for Goo, a company in the vaping industry. At the time of the incident, there were over 100,000 vape pens stored in the facility. It was revealed that a truckload of butane canisters had been delivered to the building just a week before the explosion occurred. Shockingly, some of these canisters were catapulted up to a distance of 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) due to the blast. Even more concerning, over half of the canisters remained in the building when the fire initially started.
Turner Lee Salter, a 19-year-old, tragically lost his life when he was struck by a nitrous oxide cannister propelled through the air by the explosion. Salter was approximately a quarter of a mile (0.40 kilometers) away from the incident.
On April 20, authorities received information that Kestou had attempted to fly to Hong Kong.
Macomb County Prosecutor, Peter Lucido, stated during a press conference on Friday that the ultimate goal of the individual in question remains unclear. Lucido emphasized the difficulty in predicting whether the intention was to evade authorities and potentially seek refuge in another country, possibly with a spouse and child. Identifying flight risks is not an exact science, and it is impossible to accurately determine the motivations behind such actions without further investigation.
According to Lucido, the owner of the business was a suspect right from the start. He explained that whenever someone owns a business and an incident like this occurs, they have to be considered a suspect.
According to Lucido, his office can only bring the charge of involuntary manslaughter at this time, given the information and evidence in the case.
Goo obtained a township occupancy permit in September 2022 for a 26,700-square-foot (2,480-square-meter) building. The purpose of the building is to serve as a retail location for a “smoke shop/vape store.” The store will offer various paraphernalia for vape products, according to the Clinton Township’s Building Department.
According to Fire Chief Tim Duncan of Clinton Township, the cause of the fire is still unknown. However, investigators suspect that the fire originated in the southwest corner of the building.
Kestou has been released from jail after posting a $500,000 bond. According to Lucido, authorities have taken possession of his passport and have imposed the condition that Kestou must wear a GPS tether. A probable cause hearing has been scheduled for May 7 in Clinton Township District Court.
