According to authorities, severe flooding in Brazil has killed 75 people, left 103 people missing, and left many families waiting for rescue on their rooftops.
The catastrophic situation occurs while torrential rain continues to fall on Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil’s southernmost state, according to officials.
The Guaรญba River in Porto Alegre hit a record high of 17.4 feet, creating an unprecedented problem for the city’s 1.4 million residents, according to officials.
According to the governor’s office in Rio Grande do Sul, 75 people have perished as a result of the flooding; 103 are still missing; 839, 000 homes in the area are without water; and 421, 000 are without power.
The governor’s office reports that the ongoing flooding has affected 707,000 people, forced more than 105,000 to evacuate, and resulted in at least 20,000 people losing their homes.
According to authorities, this is the worst flood in the area in almost 80 years, surpassing the historic downpour that ravaged the region in 1941.
The continuous environmental disaster is a worrisome warning for officials, as torrential rain began last Friday and is expected to continue until Tuesday.
Brazil’s President Luiz Inรกcio Lula da Silva returned to Rio Grande do Sul for the second time to visit victims and see the region’s extensive damage.
