On Friday, President Joe Biden announced that Israel has put forward a three-part plan to bring an end to the war in Gaza and secure the release of all hostages.
According to Biden, his administration has engaged in “intensive diplomacy” to come up with this proposal. The plan has been sent to Hamas through Qatar, but the terrorist group has not yet given a response.
“This is a critical moment where Israel has presented its proposal, and Hamas has expressed its desire for a cease-fire. The ball is now in their court to demonstrate their sincerity. It is imperative for Hamas to seize this opportunity and accept the deal,” emphasized Biden.
During the initial stage, there will be a period of six weeks where a complete halt to hostilities will be observed. Israeli forces will withdraw from all populated regions in Gaza, and the release of women, children, and elderly hostages will take place.
During the initial phase, there are provisions in place to facilitate the return of displaced Palestinians to their homes.
According to Biden, there are still several details that need to be negotiated between Israel and Hamas before moving on to phase two. This phase entails the release of all living hostages, including male soldiers, in exchange for Palestinians held in Israel.
According to Biden, the cease-fire will remain in effect if the phase one negotiations exceed six weeks.
“He said that if Hamas fulfills its commitment, a temporary cease-fire would transform into a permanent cessation of hostilities, as stated in the Israeli proposal.”
In the final stage, the focus shifts to two key aspects: the repatriation of deceased hostages and a comprehensive reconstruction initiative for Gaza. This endeavor entails collaborative efforts among the United States, Arab nations, and Israeli and Palestinian leaders to prevent any rearmament by Hamas.
Biden urged Israeli leaders to honor the plan, emphasizing that Hamas has suffered significant damage from Israel’s retaliation to the Oct. 7 attack. He stated that Hamas is currently incapable of executing a similar assault.
The Israeli people can make this offer without jeopardizing their own security. Hamas has been severely weakened over the past eight months, and they are no longer capable of launching another attack like the one on Oct. 7. This was one of Israel’s main objectives in this war, and it is a just one.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office released a statement, announcing his authorization for the government to present an outline that includes the return of all abducted individuals and the complete dismantling of Hamas’ military and governmental capabilities.
Netanyahu has made multiple promises to eradicate Hamas since October 7th. However, he has been facing pressure from the families of hostages and centrist members of his coalition who believe that he is not taking sufficient measures to secure their release.
Members of Netanyahu’s cabinet on the far-right, on the other hand, support the idea of prolonging the conflict and achieving complete control over Gaza.
In the aftermath of the relentless bombardment of the city of Rafah, where numerous Palestinians sought refuge from the ongoing conflict, President Biden made an announcement.
Israel persisted with its siege of Rafah, even after President Biden advised Prime Minister Netanyahu against it and halted a significant weapons shipment to Israel earlier this month.
In spite of expressing his frustrations with Netanyahu openly, Biden reaffirmed his unwavering dedication to Israel, which he considers a lifelong commitment.
“We must take a moment to reflect on the consequences of letting this opportunity slip away,” he urged. “Losing this moment would be a devastating blow. Persisting in an endless war, with the misguided goal of achieving absolute victory, will only serve to hinder both Israel and Gaza.”
