Joe Biden is set to visit Georgia and Michigan this weekend in an effort to strengthen his diminishing support among Black voters, a demographic that has historically been a stronghold for Democratic incumbent presidents.
Mr. Biden’s 2024 competitor for the presidency, Donald Trump, has been making efforts to enhance his support among Black voters, specifically Black men.
President Biden is set to deliver the commencement address at Morehouse College in Atlanta, a renowned historically Black college where the iconic Martin Luther King Jr. himself graduated.
Trey Baker, a senior campaign adviser to President Biden’s re-election campaigns, expressed his confidence in the Biden-Harris Administration’s dedication to Black America and HBCUs. In a memo to reporters, Baker stated that there is no one better suited to speak at this year’s commencement ceremony than President Biden.
On Sunday, the president will also address the NAACP Freedom Fund’s dinner in Detroit, Michigan.
According to a recent poll conducted by The New York Times and Siena College, it was found that if the election were held today, only 49 percent of Black voters would vote for Mr. Biden, while 14 percent would vote for Mr. Trump.
Following Vice President Kamala Harris’ visit to Detroit last week to emphasize the Biden administration’s commitment to supporting Black-owned businesses, Mr. Biden is now embarking on a tour of his own.
However, the visit took an unexpected turn when it was revealed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had plans to launch an attack on Rafah as part of their ongoing conflict with Hamas in Gaza.
The memo emphasized the commitment to not simply swoop in at the eleventh hour and expect the support of these communities. Instead, the focus is on consistent and ongoing efforts to engage with Black voters. The goal is clear: to secure their votes for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in the upcoming election. The memo highlights the dedication to ensuring that these candidates continue to prioritize the needs and interests of Black America in ways that have never been seen before.
The Biden campaign is making a significant investment in reaching out to Black voters and has initiated a $30 million advertising campaign in key states, specifically targeting Black and Latino voters.
At the same time, Mr. Trump has been running advertisements in an effort to connect with Black voters, along with the assistance of an external organization.
Mr. Trump also enlisted the support of prominent Black surrogates, including Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina and Representative Byron Donalds of Florida, to campaign on his behalf.
Mr. Donalds recently visited New York to express his solidarity with Mr. Trump during his criminal trial regarding the hush money he paid to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. Mr. Scott is widely regarded as a top contender to become Mr. Trump’s running mate.
According to the survey, Mr Biden was behind Mr Trump in both Michigan and Georgia. It is worth noting that Mr Trump had emerged victorious in both states during the 2016 elections. However, in the 2020 elections, Mr Biden managed to flip the results and became the first Democratic presidential candidate to win Georgia since Bill Clinton’s victory in 1992.
