President Biden appeared to make a verbal error during an address to a trade union gathering in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday.
Biden, who read from a teleprompter, appeared to include script instructions in the middle of his speech, resulting in an awkward applause line. The moment transpired during a segment of his speech that could have been straight out of a campaign stump speech.
“I envision an America that defends democracy instead of diminishing it.” I envision an America in which we protect freedoms rather than take them away,” Biden stated. “I envision an economy that grows rapidly from the bottom up, with the affluent paying their fair share, allowing us to provide child care, paid leave, and other benefits while reducing the government deficit and increasing economic opportunities.”
“Imagine what we might do next. “Four more years; pause,” he added, laughing.
Biden attended the convention on Wednesday to get the North American Building Trades Unions’ (NABTU) endorsement.
Throughout his remarks, Biden criticized former President Donald Trump for being anti-union and a supporter of the ultra-wealthy. He went on to describe his and Trump’s economic strategies as the “Scranton” and “Mar-a-Lago” plans, respectively, referring to his hometown in Pennsylvania and Trump’s estate in Florida.
Biden’s teleprompter mishap is only the latest in the president’s long line of gaffes. Just on Tuesday, Obama gave conservative analysts ammunition by wrongly suggesting he and his party “can’t be trusted.”
Biden was speaking at a campaign rally in Florida at the time, and he was specifically addressing abortion. During his criticism of Trump’s abortion policies, he turned the tables on himself.
“I’m not sure why Trump startled us.” How many times must he demonstrate his lack of trustworthiness?” Biden asked. Biden stated.
Audience members laughed following his comment, but Biden proceeded, presumably unaware of the error.
Biden’s detractors on X had a field day with the gaffe, with many expressing astonishment at finding themselves in agreement with the president.
