A federal judge in Los Angeles has granted a request to delay Hunter Biden’s federal criminal trial on tax fraud charges until September.
Biden’s legal team requested a delay for the trial, which was initially set for June 20.
During Wednesday’s hearing, Biden’s attorneys made the argument that the challenges they faced in securing expert witnesses justified a delay. However, Prosecutor Leo Wise dismissed their claims, stating that “Justice delayed is justice denied.”
According to a 56-page indictment, special counsel David Weiss, who was appointed as U.S. attorney in Delaware by former President Donald Trump and later named special counsel by Attorney General Merrick Garland to oversee the Hunter Biden probe, has accused President Joe Biden’s son of participating in a “four-year scheme” to evade paying at least $1.4 million in federal taxes. In December, Hunter Biden was charged with three felony and six misdemeanor counts related to his alleged failure to file and pay taxes, as well as his evasion of assessment and filing of a false or fraudulent tax return.
The Justice Department has revealed that Hunter Biden accumulated over $7 million in gross income, but failed to pay taxes. They also accused him of using some personal expenses, such as luxury hotel stays, luxury vehicle rentals, and escort services, as business deductions in order to avoid paying taxes and fund his lavish lifestyle.
U.S. District Judge Mark Scarsi has recently announced in court that the trial of President Biden’s son, which is scheduled to take place in Delaware federal court, will be continued. This comes as the president’s son faces felony gun charges, filed by Weiss’ office, for allegedly possessing a firearm while using illicit drugs. Despite multiple unsuccessful attempts by his attorneys to delay the trial, it will proceed as planned.
On Tuesday, the special counsel announced his intention to summon several witnesses for the gun case, among them being Hunter Biden’s former spouse and ex-girlfriends.
During the upcoming felony gun trial, prosecutors have announced their intention to present the jury with photographs retrieved from the accused’s Apple iCloud account and laptop, as well as messages that he had sent.
In 2019, a laptop was left at a computer repair shop by Hunter Biden, according to the shop owner. The owner then handed over the laptop to the FBI, along with a copy of the laptop data given to Rudy Giuliani, former lawyer for Donald Trump. Hunter Biden later filed a lawsuit against Giuliani in September, accusing him of hacking data from the laptop.
During a February 2, 2023 episode of “America’s Mayor Live,” Giuliani publicly displayed the laptop, confidently stating, “This belongs to Hunter Biden,” as he held it up. However, despite this demonstration, a spokesperson for Giuliani dismissed the claim that the drive had been tampered with as false. It is important to note that the lawsuit regarding this matter is still pending and has not been resolved.
