Cardi B spoke out after facing backlash over a joke she made at the Met Gala on Monday, May 6. On Instagram, the 31-year-old “WAP” rapper responded to criticism by stating that her dress designer was “Asian” rather than naming him. People have since shared the video of Cardi defending herself on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Chinese designer Sensen Lii created a stunning long black gown that Cardi B wore to the fashion event. Cardi declined to reveal to Vogue who her designer was. “I feel amazing,” she remarked. This designer is incredible. “They’re Asian in every way.” Cardi did mention Sensen’s brand, Windowsen, in an Instagram post.
In response to the outrage, Cardi accused her detractors of exaggerating the situation before explaining why she had forgotten her designer’s name. “I see a lot of you guys fake gagging on Twitter,” she remarked, via Entertainment Tonight. “I want to make this very clear.”
The “I Like It” rapper stated that her nerves and her first plan for the red carpet did not go as planned, which contributed to her inability to recall her designer’s name. “When I went on the red carpet, I was quite nervous because the dress was meant to be on a small podium, and I’d been practicing how to pose on the podium, but I wasn’t permitted to use it on the carpet.”She explained, “I had a lot on my mind, and they hustled me to the front of the queue.”
Cardi went on to say that she simply responded “Asian,” because she didn’t know what their nationality was. “I feel like it’s offensive if I were to be like, ‘Oh, some Chinese designer’ or’some Korean designer’ or’some Vietnamese designer,'” she stated. “I don’t want to get somebody’s nationality mixed up.”
In the end, Cardi didn’t seem to care about the reaction or if she would receive an invitation back. “Baby, this is Cardi B,” she said.
