According to state media, a section of a highway in southern China collapsed early Wednesday, resulting in cars tumbling and at least 24 people losing their lives.
According to authorities in Meizhou city, Guangdong province, a 59-foot section of the highway collapsed, resulting in eighteen cars plummeting down a slope. The incident took place at approximately 2 a.m.
According to China’s official Xinhua News agency, the death toll had increased to 24 by Wednesday afternoon.
Guangdong province has experienced unprecedented rainfall and flooding over the past two weeks, accompanied by hail. In early April, some villages in Meizhou were already inundated, and the city has been hit by heavy rains in recent days.
According to witnesses, they heard a loud noise and noticed a significant hole opening up behind them after they had driven past the specific area of the road.
Smoke and fire engulfed the scene, as depicted in videos and photos from local media. The highway rails were slanting downward into the flames, while a heap of blackened cars lay on the slope descending from the highway.
The highway seemed to have experienced a collapse, causing a portion of the road to break off and the ground beneath it to cave in.
According to the latest report from state broadcaster CCTV, rescue workers have rushed a total of 30 individuals to the hospital.
