A US Secret Service agent assigned to Vice President Kamala Harris exhibited “distressing behavior” at Joint Base Andrews on Monday morning and was hospitalized, according to authorities. Harris was not in the airbase at the time.
Around 9 a.m. local time on Monday, the agent started acting in a way that their coworkers found unsettling. They pulled the agent from their mission and summoned medical personnel.
Two people briefed on the scenario told CBS News that the agent spouted gibberish, spoke incoherently, and physically provoked another officer.
According to sources, the agent in question pushed the special agent in charge while they were approaching Joint Base Andrews’ lounge.
According to USSS, Harris was at the Naval Observatory at the time, and the event had “no impact on her departure from Joint Base Andrews.” According to sources, the incident occurred approximately an hour before Harris arrived at the airbase for a flight to Wisconsin.
Other Secret Service agents intervened promptly, handcuffed and detained the agent, and dispatched ambulances to the area, according to sources.
The hospital admitted the agent after an initial medical evaluation, according to sources. There was no evidence of substance abuse at the time, they added.
According to the sources, the USSS is currently in a temporary holding pattern until more information is available. Once the agent receives additional medical attention and evaluation, we will assess their ability to return to work. An internal review will be conducted, and the USSS will determine if the agent’s top secret security clearance will be revoked for medical or disciplinary reasons, sources stated.
According to the sources, this is currently being regarded as a medical incident rather than a disciplinary concern due to the agent’s apparent mental health challenges.
