Rep. Donald Payne Jr. won the Democratic primary in New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District on Tuesday, more than a month after his death from a heart attack.
Payne died after the deadline for adding more candidates to the primary ballot, and he was running unopposed in the district.
The congressman was hospitalized on April 6 following “a physical accident” at his house, according to his office. During therapy, he developed “medical complications due to diabetes and high blood pressure that led to subsequent cardiorespiratory arrest.” He died at age 65.
Gov. Phil Murphy has scheduled a special primary election on July 16 and a general election on September 18 to fill Payne’s seat for the remainder of his term. A dozen candidates, 11 Democrats and one Republican, have entered for the special primary election to succeed Payne.
For the term beginning in January 2025, Payne will also need a replacement on the November ballot. The Democratic county chairs in his district have the authority to hold a convention to select a nominee, according to the New Jersey Globe. They have until August 29 to name a replacement.
Following the death of his late father, Rep. Donald Payne Sr., from colon cancer, Payne won his first election to the House in 2012.
