During a weekend campaign address in New Jersey, former President Trump alluded to the famed fictional serial killer Hannibal Lecter as a “wonderful man.”
The admiration for the cannibal from “The Silence of the Lambs” came as Trump was comparing migrants to Lecter, repeating the unproven assertion that migrants crossing the border are violent criminals or have come from other countries’ “insane asylums.”
“Have you ever seen ‘The Silence of the Lambs’? Hannibal Lecter, the late, great one. He’s a nice guy. He frequently had a guest around for dinner. Remember that last scene? ‘Excuse me, I’m about to have a buddy for dinner,’ said the poor doctor as he walked by. ‘I’m going to have supper with a friend.’ But what about Hannibal Lecter? Congratulations. “The late, great Hannibal Lecter,” Trump declared.
Trump then returned to discussing the migrant situation.
“We have unleashed people into our nation who we do not want there, and they are entering completely unchecked and unvetted.” And we can’t let it happen. “They’re destroying our country while we sit back,” Trump added. We must secure victory in this election, as failure to do so would spell doom for our country. It’s going to be disastrous.”
Throughout the campaign, Trump has equated immigration with Lecter. According to The New York Times, he has previously lauded Lecter as “legendary” and a lovely person, according to The New York Times.
Trump’s recent remarks come after he spent the past few weeks in a Manhattan courtroom rather than traveling and campaigning as he seeks a second term in the White House.
