He visits construction sites in Manhattan, expressing his concern over local crime and holding meetings in his luxurious penthouse on Fifth Avenue.
Former U.S. Representative Lee Zeldin, a Republican who ran against Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul in 2022 and narrowly lost, suggests that President Trump should make the most of his time in Manhattan by visiting various communities in the city.
Zeldin refrained from disclosing the specifics of his private discussions with Trump campaign aides. However, he did mention that his gubernatorial campaign involved visiting vibrant Asian American neighborhoods such as Chinatown and Flushing in Queens, as well as Dominican communities in the south Bronx, and Orthodox Jewish communities, among other diverse communities.
According to the candidate, he found that although these neighborhoods had traditionally been Democratic strongholds, the residents were still receptive to his message. He believes that his ability to engage with them on issues that mattered to them, rather than simply relying on party affiliation, was what made a significant impact.
According to him, once that video is captured, it spreads rapidly across the entire nation through extensive sharing.
During his visits to heavily Democratic New York City, Trump’s presence often gives the impression of a mayoral campaign rather than a bid for the White House.
On Thursday, a multitude of reporters and cameras gathered across the street to capture Trump’s visit to the firehouse. Inside, Trump expressed his gratitude to the staff for their dedicated service, according to FDNY spokesman Jim Long. It is worth noting that Trump had previously visited this firehouse, along with a neighboring police precinct, in 2021 when he returned to the city after leaving office to commemorate the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.
The FDNY expressed their gratitude towards anyone who supports their members, regardless of their political affiliation. They mentioned that they have had the honor of hosting esteemed leaders such as former President Barack Obama, former Vice President Mike Pence, and all the mayors of the city over the years.
During his visit to the bodega, which had witnessed a violent crime, Trump took the opportunity to criticize Alvin Bragg, the district attorney who was handling the hush money case. Bragg had faced criticism for pressing murder charges against a store cashier who had fatally stabbed a customer, an incident that seemed to be an act of self-defense. Eventually, those charges were dropped.
Last week, Trump paid a visit to an unfinished skyscraper, which interestingly, was not one of his own. He took the opportunity to engage with the enthusiastic construction workers, shaking hands, signing their hats and helmets, and posing for memorable pictures against the backdrop of hard hats and steel beams.
The image reminded him of his days as a developer when he was a prominent figure in the city. He was often seen on the covers of New York’s competitive tabloids, discussing projects that proudly displayed his name in large, golden letters.
During the stop, Trump expressed his admiration for the collaboration between him and the people involved in constructing numerous remarkable buildings in the city.
After assuming office in 2017, Trump, who became a Florida resident in 2019, rarely resided in New York. As president, he made only a few visits to the state and eventually relocated to his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida upon leaving the White House in 2021.
In a tweet he made in 2019, X announced his decision to establish Florida as his official residence. Despite expressing his fondness for New York and stating that he would always cherish it, he mentioned that he had faced unfavorable treatment from the city and state’s political leaders. X highlighted the significant amount of taxes he paid annually, amounting to millions of dollars. He later revealed in an interview with the New York Post that as president, he had intentionally avoided frequent visits to the city to prevent disruptions caused by his presidential motorcade.
Trump Tower, where he filmed “The Apprentice” and later held his 2016 campaign launch, had to be largely abandoned. Following his unexpected victory, Trump attracted the attention of reporters, who camped out in the building’s lobby for weeks. During this time, he paraded a series of presidential candidates and celebrities like Kanye West through the lobby.
Trump had always expressed his desire to campaign in his hometown, New York, despite the city’s predominantly Democratic leanings. He firmly believed that he had a fighting chance of winning, even though President Joe Biden emerged victorious in the 2020 election with a significant 60% of the vote.
“We have big plans for New York,” Trump declared during his recent visit to a Harlem bodega. “I have a deep affection for this city, but things have taken a turn for the worse in the past few years. Our mission is to restore order and bring New York back to its former glory.”
Being stuck in the city, he also mentioned the advantages it brings.
“I find it more effective to campaign locally,” he expressed, his New York accent becoming more pronounced. “I believe there is greater media coverage here compared to if I were to go to a more picturesque location.”
