Former President Trump’s son is criticizing President Biden after the Democrat dismissed economic concerns and said he inherited 9% inflation when he began office.
“What a clown,” Eric Trump said on X, citing a report about Biden’s comments.
In a rare interview with CNN’s Erin Burnett on Wednesday evening, Biden made the factually incorrect claim about low consumer confidence in the economy, which included rising housing costs, declining real income adjusted for inflation, and weak economic growth since Biden took office.
“No president has had the same success as we have in terms of job creation and inflation reduction. It was 9% when I took officeโ9%,” the 81-year-old president stated on Wednesday, referring to the January 2021 inflation rate of 1.4%. It increased to 9.1% in June 2022, 17 months later.
A White House official later informed Fox News on Thursday that President Biden’s words did not mislead Americans and that the coronavirus pandemic triggered inflation, which was already underway when Biden entered office in January 2021.
A White House official claimed that when Biden took office, he was highlighting the existence of inflationary elements.
During Wednesday night’s interview, Biden again disputed surveys showing voters disapproving of his handling of the economy, stating that these voters believe Trump is more on the topic and that the polling was inaccurate.
Those questioned did not share Biden’s optimistic view of the economy.
When pressed by Burnett about current inflation and the higher grocery prices that Americans have had to pay during his leadership, Biden insisted, “We’ve already turned it around.”
“When I started this administration, some predicted an economic crash. We have the world’s strongest economy. Let me say it again, around the globe,” he concluded.
The president then stated that Americans were “personally in good shape” economically.
A Gallup poll on the housing market released on Thursday morning revealed that Biden was also incorrect in that regard.
The majority of Americans view the current housing market negatively and expect home prices to rise. According to the poll, 68% expect rising prices in the future, while 76% believe now is a bad time to buy a house.
During the interview, Burnett pushed back, citing CNN polling results. Biden responded by writing off the entire network.
“The polling data has been incorrect all along.” You guys do a poll at CNN; how many people do you have to call to get one response?” he inquired. “The notion that we find ourselves in a dire situation is quite distressing.”
He eventually admitted that inflation is “really worrisome to people,” but he continued to laud his administration’s economic performance.
Eric Trump is not the only one criticizing Biden; former Obama aide and CNN political commentator David Axelrod recently criticized Biden’s combative position on the economy.
On Wednesday, Axelrod described it as a “terrible mistake” that could cost him the forthcoming election.
“It’s completely true. The pandemic threw the world and America into an economic crisis, and we recovered faster than virtually any other country, which he is correct about. But that’s not how people perceive the economy,” Axelrod told Burnett.
“They see it through the lens of the cost of living.” He is also a man who has built a career on empathy. “Why not lead with empathy?” he inquired. Axelrod added, “And I think he’s making a terrible mistake…” If he does not win this campaign, Donald Trump may not be the one to beat him. “It could be his own pride.”
