On Sunday, a man impersonating an officer with the NYPD pepper-sprayed a tourist, but he has since been identified as a former convict who served six years in prison.
According to authorities, Dominic Ogrady, aged 35, reportedly obstructed the entrance of South Ferry subway station in Manhattan, preventing commuters from entering. He then proceeded to detain them while impersonating a police officer and wearing a phony NYPD detective shield on a chain around his neck.
According to the police, a 46-year-old man was left with burning and swelling on his face after an attack by Ogrady. The victim sought medical attention at Bellevue Hospital but was later released. However, Ogrady remains at large and has not been apprehended yet.
As per the report from the New York Daily News, the victim, aged 46, was accompanied by his family and reportedly entered the station by passing through an open exit gate without paying the fare.
According to the police, Ogrady goes by the name Domingo Diaz and spent six years in jail for being found guilty of attempting to possess weapons. In 2007, he was caught with a firearm in Harlem, which led to his conviction. He served his sentence and was released from prison in 2014.
