Former Republican Congressman Peter Meijer from Michigan has announced on the social platform X that he is no longer running for Senate.
Meijer, who voted in favor of impeaching former President Trump following the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, announced his candidacy for the Senate in November. He aims to replace Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.). Among the Republicans in the House, he was one of the ten who voted for the impeachment of the former president in the aftermath of the riot at the Capitol.
In a heartfelt statement on X, Meijer expressed his sincere gratitude for the overwhelming support his campaign has received. He humbly acknowledged the dedication and contributions of those who invested their time and resources to help him reach this milestone. Moreover, Meijer expressed his deep appreciation for the countless individuals he had the privilege of meeting during his campaign in Michigan, who served as a constant source of inspiration.
Meijer found himself at odds with the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), the campaign arm of the Senate GOP, in his pursuit of the Senate seat. The NRSC had approached former Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) to join the race.
“In a statement, Jason Thielman, the Executive Director of the NRSC, expressed concern about the viability of Peter Meijer in a primary election. There is also worry that if Meijer were to be nominated, the base would not be enthused in the general election.”
In response to the NRSC’s endorsement of James, Meijer’s campaign fired back, stating, “It comes as no surprise that DC Republicans are more inclined to support a candidate who will obediently follow their orders and avoid making any waves. That’s simply not who I am.”
“I may be considered old-fashioned, but I value the opinions of Michigan voters above all else. The NRSC, speaking on background, acknowledges their preference for a centrist candidate, and that’s perfectly acceptable. However, that’s not who I am. I identify as a constitutionalist conservative,” the statement emphasized.
Trump expressed his delight on Friday, criticizing both Meijer and Rep. Dan Newhouse (Wash.), another Republican who voted to impeach him following the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
In a recent post on Truth Social, former President Donald Trump expressed his congratulations to the Republicans and shared news about Peter Meijer’s decision to withdraw from the Senate Race in Michigan. Trump acknowledged Meijer as one of the ten individuals who voted to impeach him during his presidency and someone who was considered to have a promising political future.
Former President Trump took aim at Rep. Justin Amash, criticizing his political career after Amash made the decision to impeach Trump. Trump stated, “Once he raised his very little and delicate hand to impeach President Trump, his political career was over!” Trump also pointed out that Amash had previously lost in the primary and now lost to a “great candidate,” Mike Rogers, who Trump believed would easily win the nomination and go on to win the Senate in Michigan.
In a recent statement, he expressed his satisfaction, saying, “Fortunately, the 10 Impeachers are nearly out of the picture. Jerrod Sessler, who is running in Washington State, will be the next to go. Make sure to vote for him!”
