Former British Prime Minister David Cameron suggested on Friday that Ukraine could employ British weapons within Russian territory.
Cameron, the British secretary of state for international, Commonwealth, and development affairs, made the remarks during a visit to Kyiv on Friday.
“Just as Russia strikes inside Ukraine, you can understand why Ukraine feels the need to defend itself,” Cameron told reporters during the trip, adding that Britain would provide Ukraine with $3.75 billion (ยฃ3 billion) every year for as long as necessary.
Cameron said Ukraine should have the “right” to select how it uses Western weapons in its confrontation with Russia, which entered day 800 on Friday.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the need for additional military aid while praising Cameron for his financial pledge.
“First and foremost, armored vehicles, ammunition, and various types of missiles,” Zelensky stated Friday at a meeting between the two, according to the president of Ukraine’s official website.
Russia emphasized that Britain’s support might exacerbate tensions across Europe.
“This is a direct escalation of tensions surrounding the Ukrainian conflict, which could pose a threat to European security,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters in Moscow on Friday.
Peskov was also replying to remarks made by French President Emmanuel Macron the day before.
On Thursday, Macron stated that he is “not ruling anything out” in terms of deploying Western soldiers to Ukraine if Russian forces break through the front lines.
