The Canadian freighter M/V Michipicoten crashed with an unknown underwater object near Isle Royal on Saturday morning and is now limping to a nearby port while taking in water.
The 689-foot freighter, carrying taconite iron ore, left Two Harbors, Minnesota, before colliding with the undersea object about 35 miles southwest of Isle Royal on Lake Superior.
At 6:53 a.m., the US Coast Guard’s Great Lakes District received reports of a collision.
The yacht had a crew of 22 and was listing at 15 degrees when the Coast Guard discovered its condition.
By 9:15 a.m., the ship’s water pumps had reduced the list to 5 degrees, prompting the evacuation of half the crew for safety.
The Coast Guard dispatched helicopters and warships to the ship, and the bulk carrier Edwin H. Gott has taken up position alongside the Michipicoten.
The Coast Guard, National Park Service, and US Border Patrol warships are also escorting the vessel to the next port for inspection and repair.
There are no indicators of a cargo spill.
