Colorado’s Democratic Governor, Jared Polis, strongly criticized the Biden administration for imposing tariffs on Chinese-made goods.
Polis expressed his criticism of the recently imposed tariffs on solar cell and electric vehicle (EV) imports from Beijing, stating that these tariffs will have a detrimental effect on consumers in the U.S. Furthermore, he emphasized that these tariffs would be a significant setback for the clean energy sector.
In a recent post on social media platform X, Polis expressed his dismay over the news, stating, “This is terrible news for American consumers and a significant setback for clean energy.” He further emphasized the negative impact of tariffs, calling them a direct and regressive tax on Americans. Polis also highlighted the fact that this tax increase would affect every family.
The administration confirmed on Tuesday that it has enacted tariffs as part of its efforts to reduce U.S. emissions. This announcement has been met with criticism.
According to officials, the Chinese EV imports will face an increase in tariffs from 25 to 100 percent as a measure to counteract Beijing’s export efforts. Additionally, the tariffs for solar cell imports will double, rising from 25 to 50 percent. This spike aims to address the dominance of Chinese solar production, which currently accounts for approximately 70 percent of the global market.
Solar cell tariffs were put into effect in 2018 during the tenure of then-President Trump. In 2022, Biden extended these tariffs.
Just a few months after Biden ordered an investigation into Chinese-made vehicles with internet connectivity, EV tariffs have been introduced. The probe, which was announced in February, includes electric vehicles as part of its scope.
The administration has encountered resistance from certain Democrats when it comes to EVs. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), who is one of the most vulnerable Democrats seeking re-election, has strongly advocated for prohibiting the import of Chinese EVs into the United States without any exceptions.
