Harvey Weinstein, the once powerful Hollywood producer and convicted sex offender, has been admitted to a hospital in New York City, as confirmed by his attorney.
Arthur Aidala, Weinstein’s appellate lawyer, informed The Associated Press on Saturday that Weinstein has been transferred from a prison in upstate New York to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan.
“He underwent a thorough examination and was subsequently referred to Bellevue. It appears that he requires extensive physical assistance due to numerous health issues. He is currently undergoing various tests to assess his condition. According to Mr. Aidala, he is in a precarious state of health and is facing multiple challenges.”
Just days after a New York appeals court overturned his rape conviction, news has emerged that the trial judge made “egregious errors” by allowing prosecutors to call witnesses whose allegations were unrelated to the charges at hand.
After his 23-year prison sentencing was overturned, Weinstein was transferred from Mohawk Correction Facility, which is around 35 miles from Syracuse, to Rikers Island on Friday afternoon.
Due to his 2022 Los Angeles rape conviction, the 72-year-old will continue to be held in custody.
Mr. Aidala’s statement regarding Weinstein’s health issues remains unclear, as he did not specify the exact ailments. However, he emphasized that these issues were physical rather than mental. Additionally, Aidala stated that his client, Weinstein, remains mentally sharp.
According to Weinstein’s lawyers, he has been diagnosed with sleep apnea, cardiac issues, diabetes, and eye problems.
According to Mr. Aidala, the treatment of the individual in question was extremely poor. He was denied even a sip of water, as well as any food or bathroom breaks. It is important to note that he is a 72-year-old man who is already in poor health.
The lawyer stated that Weinstein will undergo tests at Bellevue before he is sent back to Rikers.
Harvey Weinstein is scheduled to make an appearance in Manhattan Criminal Court on Wednesday.
The state’s decision on whether to retry Weinstein remains uncertain. A representative from the Manhattan district attorney’s office emphasized their dedication to survivors of sexual assault, stating, “We will make every effort to bring this case back to trial.”
