Former President Trump has been granted permission by the judge overseeing his New York hush money trial to attend his son’s graduation ceremony next month.
Former President Donald Trump will be granted permission to attend the high school graduation of his youngest son, Barron Trump, on May 17, according to Judge Juan Merchan. The decision, which had been postponed earlier this month, will now allow Trump to be present for this significant milestone in his son’s life.
Trump had previously criticized Merchan for causing a delay in the decision, expressing his frustration at the possibility of being prevented from attending the event. According to New York state law, Trump is obligated to be present for the entire duration of his trial unless granted special permission by the judge to be absent.
“I had been eagerly anticipating that graduation, hoping to share the special moment with my mother and father,” Trump expressed to reporters. “Unfortunately, it appears that the judge is determined to prevent me from evading this fraudulent trial. It’s truly disheartening to witness such an unjust proceeding.”
Several other Republicans and Trump allies joined in criticizing Merchan for his decision to delay. Eric Trump, one of Trump’s sons, expressed his disapproval by stating that the judge is “truly heartless in not letting a father attend his son’s graduation.”
Former President Trump had requested to take time off from the trial not only for his son’s graduation but also for other important events. One such event was the Supreme Court oral arguments related to his presidential immunity case. However, Judge Merchan ruled that Trump could not attend the high court proceedings as he was required to be present for his hush money trial.
While Trump is currently tied up in a Manhattan courtroom for the trial, his other lawyers have been handling his various legal battles. The presumptive GOP presidential nominee has expressed frustration over the hush money trial, as it prevents him from actively participating in the campaign trail for the next few weeks. He believes that the trial is politically motivated.
