On Tuesday, May 14, the Hackensack police apprehended Diego G. Buri-Mora, 35, and promptly alerted the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit.
According to Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella, the incident allegedly took place while the juvenile was visiting family members.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement promptly submitted a formal request for Buri-Mora to be detained until a hearing can be scheduled to ascertain his immigration status in the United States.
Detainers like these are requested whenever individuals suspected of residing in the country unlawfully are incarcerated.
An immigration judge in federal court in Newark will conduct a hearing to decide on Buri-Mora’s deportation, including the timing of such proceedings.
If, for any reason, a local judge in Hackensack orders Buri-Mora’a release, such as bail reform, ICE has requested to be notified 48 hours in advance so that immigration agents can take custody of him.
Bergen County Sheriff Anthony Cureton has shown recognition to detainer requests for individuals who have been accused or found guilty of serious crimes.
