On Saturday night, in the Kensington area of Philadelphia, a police officer was shot and seriously injured. Fortunately, a suspected gunman is now in custody.
According to authorities, 36-year-old Ramon Rodriguez Vazquez was identified as the gunman involved in a traffic stop conducted by two police officers on the 3500 block of F Street. The traffic stop involved four individuals, including Vazquez, and occurred just before 8 p.m.
As the officers made a stop, they noticed a holster in plain sight.
According to the police, Rodriguez Vazquez fled the scene and fired three shots at the officers while doing so.
The neck of one of the officers was hit by a bullet, and in response, his partner fired back before quickly transporting the injured officer to Temple University Hospital.
As of now, the officer who sustained gunshot wounds is still in critical condition and being treated in the surgical ICU.
Late Saturday night, Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel addressed the media outside Temple University Hospital.
Bethel, who frequently visits the place with a heavy heart due to the challenges faced by her team, had a different request this time. She recently attended an event in an auditorium where around 75 to 100 men from the East Division were present. During the event, Commissioner Stanford brought them together, and they held hands to offer a prayer for their officer. “Today, I did not come with anger, but with a wish to pray for our officer and show our support,” she stated.
Bethel urged the citizens of Philadelphia to offer their prayers for the officer today.
Police have taken several individuals who were inside the vehicle with the shooter into custody.
Rodriguez Vazquez, who is accused of a home invasion, is currently facing multiple charges, including attempted murder, burglary, kidnapping, and other offenses.
Officials have not released the identity of the officer who was shot. However, they have revealed that the officer is a six-year veteran of the force and is 31 years old.
