A powerful tornado wreaked havoc in the town of Greenfield, western Iowa on Tuesday, resulting in an unknown number of fatalities. The destructive force of the storm left a trail of destruction, leveling everything in its path.
Greenfield, a small town with a population of approximately 2,000, experienced significant destruction, situated around 50 miles southwest of Des Moines. The Iowa State Patrol tragically confirmed the occurrence of “multiple fatalities.”
Greenfield, which has a population of roughly 2,000 and is located about 50 miles southwest of Des Moines, sustained significant damage, with the Iowa State Patrol confirming “multiple fatalities.”
“Unfortunately, we can confirm that this tornado resulted in fatalities.” Also, residents in the Greenfield region have experienced injuries,” Iowa State Patrol Sergeant Alex Dinkla told reporters Tuesday, adding that the actual number of persons killed or injured would not be known until Wednesday.
According to Dinkla, Adair County Memorial Hospital also sustained damage, necessitating the evacuation of about a dozen tornado victims to facilities outside the area.
Drone footage revealed a large path of devastation after the tornado struck.
“The Greenfield community has shown incredible unity during this challenging time, with neighbors and friends displaying remarkable compassion, empathy, and support,” Dinkla stated.
“The Greenfield community faces a long road ahead of them.” But if their actions today are any indication of what is to come, they will emerge stronger and more united than ever.
Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds has signed a disaster proclamation for the 15 counties affected by Tuesday’s extreme weather, and she plans to visit Greenfield Wednesday morning to inspect the damage.
“My thoughts and prayers are with all of the communities and families impacted by today’s severe weather, particularly those who tragically died in the Greenfield area.” “I am committed to using all of the state’s resources to support the response and recovery effort,” Reynolds said in a statement.
“It was just a few weeks ago that tornadoes hit several other Iowa communities, and it’s hard to believe that it’s happened again,” Reynolds said.
“Iowans are strong and resilient, and we will get through this together.”
