House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) has demanded an apology from Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, accusing him of showing disrespect towards the American flag.
In a press release on Friday, Jeffries expressed his strong disapproval of Samuel Alito’s actions, stating that Alito should apologize without delay for his disrespectful behavior towards the American flag and his apparent sympathy towards right-wing violent insurrectionists.
“He should abstain from participating in any cases related to the 2020 election and [former President Trump],” stated the New York Democrat. “Congress ought to promptly deliberate on enacting legislation that establishes an ethical code of conduct for the Supreme Court, which seems to have deviated from its intended path. The Constitution mandates and the American people deserve a justice who upholds the principles of justice rather than engaging in groundless denial of election outcomes.”
In January 2021, an upside-down American flag was flown at Alito’s Alexandria, Va., home, as reported by The New York Times. The act of displaying an upside-down American flag is associated with the “Stop the Steal” movement, which is based on unfounded allegations of election fraud.
According to Alito, his wife, Martha-Ann Alito, took charge of handling the flag.
“I had absolutely no part in flying the flag,” Alito clarified to the Times. “It was briefly displayed by Mrs. Alito as a response to a neighbor’s use of offensive and personally insulting language on their yard signs.”
According to the statement, it is recommended that Justice Alito recuse himself from any cases pertaining to the 2020 election and the January 6th insurrection. This includes the ongoing consideration of the former President’s immunity in the case of U.S. v. Donald Trump.
