On Thursday, May 23, Joe Biden said that the United States does not accept the International Criminal Court (ICC) and that Israel and Hamas are not the same.
His words came after Karim Khan, the prosecutor for the ICC, asked for an arrest warrant for Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel.
In his statement, Mr. Khan said that he had good reasons to think that Mr. Netanyahu, who is in charge of Israel’s defense, and three Hamas leaders “bear criminal responsibility” for what he called “war crimes and crimes against humanity.”
The ICC judges have not yet reviewed his move and can change, reject, or accept it.
The US is not a member of the court, but it has supported prosecutions in the past. For example, the US supported the ICC’s move last year to issue an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin over the war in Ukraine.
