President Biden made a surprise appearance on the Howard Stern show on Friday, engaging in a live interview at Stern’s New York City studio. The conversation lasted for about an hour and covered a wide range of topics, including Biden’s personal life and his time as President.
During the interview, Biden opened up about the profound grief he experienced following the tragic loss of his first wife, Neilia, and their 13-month-old daughter, Naomi. He candidly shared that, at times, he even contemplated turning to alcohol as a coping mechanism, despite never having consumed it before. This vulnerable revelation sheds light on the immense emotional turmoil he endured during that period of his life.
“I used to find myself sitting there, contemplating the idea of grabbing a bottle of scotch,” Biden admitted. “I would think, ‘Maybe I’ll just drink it and drown my sorrows in alcohol.'”
“I had a moment where I realized that you don’t have to be in a state of madness to contemplate suicide. It’s like when you reach the pinnacle of success, you fear that it’s fleeting and will never return,” Biden shared. “I remember thinking to myself, ‘Why don’t I just go to the Delaware Memorial Bridge and end it all?'”
Biden urged individuals facing difficulties to consider seeking therapy.
The interview took everyone by surprise as it wasn’t mentioned on Biden’s public schedule. After attending a fundraiser hosted by actor Michael Douglas in Westchester County, Biden spent Thursday night in New York City.
During the interview, Stern delved into various aspects of Biden’s personal and professional life. Among the topics discussed were Biden’s first wife, his experiences playing football, and stories about his stutter during his childhood. Additionally, Biden shared candid insights into his time in law school, where he admitted to not taking his studies seriously and even confessing to ditching textbooks, referring to himself as a “jerk” in retrospect.
During the interview, Stern expressed admiration for Biden and his family multiple times. They discussed various topics, including Biden’s experience as a public defender, his readiness to debate former President Trump, and his views on the Supreme Court, which Biden described as “perhaps the most conservative in modern history.”
“Mr. President, just take a look at me, sitting right here with the president,” Stern exclaimed enthusiastically towards the end of the interview.
Biden responded, expressing his excitement, “Look at me, sitting with Howard Stern.”
During the interview, there were some lighter moments. For instance, Stern playfully inquired whether Biden ever went on Facebook to search for women who had rejected him in the past, just so he could now boast about being the most powerful leader in the world. Biden chuckled in response and brushed off the question.
During the 2020 campaign, Stern reportedly attempted to arrange an interview with Biden, but unfortunately, it never materialized. In 2019, Stern had the opportunity to sit down with former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton for an interview.
Stern used to have a friendly relationship with Trump, but he has now become a vocal critic of the former president.
The shock jock became widely known for his highly popular radio show, which was syndicated nationwide and later moved to SiriusXM in 2006. Biden’s team wasted no time in promoting the interview on Friday morning, emphasizing their commitment to reaching voters through unconventional means.
According to Paul Tencher, a former Democratic Senate aide, he expressed on the social platform X that Stern’s radio program holds significant cultural value for the much-needed voters.
